EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A goal from
Kennady Orlick in the second period erased an early Evansville lead, but the Missouri State women's soccer team proved unable to break the 1-1 tie through double overtime Wednesday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Evansville (1-9-3, 0-2-2 MVC)Â struck first in the midweek match, capitalizing in a scramble at the net as Sophia Rodil buried it in the fourth minute to give the Purple Aces the 1-0 edge.
Minutes later,
Jordan Eickelman aimed to even the score, firing an on-target shot that fell in the hands of the Purple Aces' goalkeeper Lauren Fischer.
Ashley Coonfield and Orlick tacked on another two attempts as MSU (8-3-2, 2-1-1 MVC)Â headed into intermission down 1-0.
The Bears wasted little time in the second as Orlick provided MSU with the equalizing tally, punching it between the frames to knot it 1-1 in the 53
rd minute.
MSU's defense provided a stellar effort down the stretch, clearing out seven Purple Aces corner kicks in the second period.
Kaitlin Maxwell picked up two grabs to round out her five-save performance, all coming during regulation.
Coonfield continued the Bears' offensive push in overtime, sailing a shot just high within two minutes of the first overtime period. MSU recorded five more shots across extra time, but the Purple Aces snuffed out every opportunity including a game-saving stop on a shot from
Brooke Zenner in the final minute.
Both clubs were evenly matched on both sides of the ball, each posting 14 shots and five saves. MSU launched six of those in overtime, with Eickelman leading the offensive charge with four chances.
"Credit our players for continuing to battle and scoring the equalizer," said head coach
Rob Brewer. "Both sides played an even match and we look forward to a home stretch."
MSU returns to Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium for a two-game homestand beginning with UNI on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
