SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State junior
Hunter Steinmetz became the third Bear taken in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, as the Toronto Blue Jays picked the outfielder in the 11th round with the 326th overall pick.
Steinmetz joins fellow MSU juniors
Jeremy Eierman (second round, Oakland) and
Dylan Coleman (fourth round, San Diego) on the Bears' list of 2018 draftees. Overall, the Bears have produced 140 players who have gone on to sign professional contracts over their 55 years as a varsity program, including 121 during
Keith Guttin's 36-year tenure as head coach.
Steinmetz, who batted .307 with five homers and 37 RBIs this spring, produced a red-hot second half of the season that coincided with the Bears' run to a third Missouri Valley Conference title in four seasons. He hit .305 during Valley play and led the club in runs scored (49), while ranking third in hits (59) and steals (8). Steinmetz, a Springfield native, also turned in a .983 fielding percentage to earn his second-straight MVC All-Defensive Team nod and secured a spot on the NCAA Oxford Regional All-Tournament Team this past weekend.
In addition to the three active Bears taken in the draft, MSU signees Trey Riley (fifth round, Atlanta) and Wyatt Sparks (23rd round, Texas) were also selected as part of the draft.
