– The 2018 season for Missouri State women's tennis came to a close on Friday, as the Bears fell to No. 5 Ole Miss, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship at Palmer/Shalloum Tennis Center.
"I am so proud of this team and everything we have accomplished this season," head coach Mallory Weber
said post match. "To be Missouri Valley Conference Champions and have a chance to compete on the national stage is a great honor.
"We lost to a very strong Ole Miss team today, but I am so proud of our fight," Weber continued. "It was great for the girls to see that they were right there on some of the courts.
"We lose two amazing seniors in Abbey Belote
and Anelisse Torrico Moreno
. They have done so much to build this program and I can't wait to start building again in the fall."
The Bears (12-10) battled but dropped the doubles point to the Rebels (20-6). Ole Miss secured the point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-0 decision at the No. 3 contest.
In singles, Ole Miss continued to press MSU. Arianne Hartono collected a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alye Darter
in the No. 1 singles contest, while Alexa Bortles tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ellie Burger
at No. 5 singles. Anna Vrbenska clinched the match for Ole Miss with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Phoebe Boeschen
in the No. 3 singles match.
Junior Fati Khamissi's
eight-match win-streak at No. 4 singles will continue into next season as her match went unfinished. Khamissi was one game away from taking the second set when it was halted at 2-6, 5-0.
Torrico Moreno, at No. 2 singles, was about to start the second set, after dropping the first set 7-6. Belote's No. 6 singles match also went unfinished, down 6-1, 4-0.
