Tulsa Tops Soccer Bears in Double Overtime

Box Score | Season Stats

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State women's soccer team (4-7-0) took Tulsa to double overtime, but an own goal with one minute remaining in the final period sealed a 3-2 loss to the Golden Hurricanes, Sunday afternoon at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.

Tulsa took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute as Addyson Guthrie snuck a shot past starting goalkeeper Lexi Palacio. Senior Brooke Zimmerman took the first shot for the Bears four minutes later, but missed just left of the goal. The two squads battled back-and-forth for control for the next 15 minutes until a lightening delay paused action for the next half hour.

Returning from the break, Missouri State strung together a pair of corner kicks, but was unable to even the score. Outshooting the Golden Hurricanes 9-7 in the first 45 minutes, Missouri State trailed Tulsa, 1-0, heading into halftime.

Both teams came out of halftime looking to score immediately as each team's goalkeeper recorded a save within the first three minutes. Missouri State gained momentum in the 53rd minute as freshman Jordan Eickelman dribbled the ball up the field and crossed it into the box to Kayleigh Putnam. Putnam fired off a shot and was blocked, but Zimmerman got hold of the rebounded shot and evened the score with a laser into the middle of the net.

Ten scoreless minutes went by before the Golden Hurricanes would take its second lead of the match. On a corner kick, Tulsa's Danielle Hoover lined in a goal from the far corner to give the Golden Hurricanes a 2-1 advantage. However, Missouri State responded six minutes later when sophomore Ashley Coonfield drew a key foul inside the box – resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Bears.

Senior Mary Disidore lined up for the shot and artfully guided the ball past the Tulsa goalkeeper to even up the score, 2-2. Missouri State maintained control of the ball in the second half, holding Tulsa to just three shots while the Bears recorded 15. Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half, prompting overtime action.

Tulsa controlled the ball, claiming the only three shots taken during the first overtime period. Palacio kept the Bears alive, stepping up to grab two key shots that would have ended the match. However, the Bears' efforts were ended in the 108th minute when the Missouri State defense misplayed the ball and scored in its own goal to end the match.

The Bears recorded a season-high 26 shots, nine of which were on goal. Palacio ended the afternoon with four saves and recorded her first loss of the season.
