Women’s Soccer Drops MVC Opener

Box Score | Season Stats

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team (4-8-0) held on for nearly 90 minutes, but a Crusader goal with less than 30 seconds remaining sealed the Bears' fate in the squad's 1-0 loss to Valparaiso, Saturday night.

The Bears and Crusaders clashed for control throughout the first half as Valparaiso fired off nine shots while the Bears tallied five. MSU's first scoring opportunity came in the first minute when Kayleigh Putnam squared up to score, but was blocked.

Missouri State attempted two shots on goal for the remainder of the half, but each stroke fell into the hands of Valparaiso goalkeeper, Drew Moulton. Earning her second start of the season, freshman goalkeeper Lexi Palacio garnered her first of five saves with three minutes remaining in the opening half to help keep the match even at zero.

Valparaiso came out of halftime hungry for a goal, attempting four shots before the Bears were able to try for a goal. The Bears came close to netting a goal in the 75th minute as Putnam found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Crusader keeper. Her shot was saved and junior Brooke Prondzinski found the rebound, but fell to a similar fate as she kicked the ball right into the hands of Moulton.

With 27 seconds remaining on the clock, Valparaiso's Sydney Griffin pushed the ball down the field and connected with Kelsey Jahn in the box. Jahn fired off a shot and managed to sneak the ball past the hands of Palacio to give the Crusaders the lone goal of the match – resulting in a 1-0 loss for the Bears.

Scoring Summary
  • VALPO – 89:33, Kelsey Jahn – received cross into the box, shot from 10 yards out and assisted by Sydney Griffin.
