Late Goal Lifts Mississippi State Past Women's Soccer

Box Score | Season Stats

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Senior Rachel Catrell netted the Bears' lone goal as the Missouri State women's soccer team (0-2-0) fell to the Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-0-0), 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Bears and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the entirety of the first half, totaling just three shots between the two teams in the first 45 minutes of play. Mississippi State registered the first shot of the match, bouncing the ball off the right post in the 20th minute.

Following the Bulldog's other first-half shot, senior Mary Disidore logged the Bears' only scoring attempt of the half in the 30th minute, missing just over of the goal. Neither goalkeepers recorded saves as both teams entered halftime scoreless.

Mississippi State jumped on the board ten minutes into the second half as AK Ward netted the Bulldogs' first goal of the match. Responding to the deficit, Catrell evened up the contest in the 60th minute with an equalizing goal off a skillful assist from newcomer Jordan Eickelman.

Following a 20-minute scoring drought, Mississippi State regained the lead off its seventh corner kick of the match to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage over the Bears. Missouri State lined up for a corner kick with three minutes remaining, but couldn't capitalize on the play, resulting in the Bears' second loss of the season. Protecting the MSU goal, freshman Kaitlin Maxwell (0-2) tallied four saves in the second half and contributed a full 90 minutes.

"Our team battled well today," head coach Rob Brewer said. "They were very resilient in the hot conditions down here. Mississippi State is a strong team and if we keep improving, we will win our share of games this season."
