Missouri State (15-10, 6-6 MVC) will get a shot at Missouri Valley Conference co-leader Wichita State (21-4, 11-1 MVC) on the road Thursday at 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
Series History
The series between the Bears and Shockers dates back to the 1941-42 season with Wichita State holding a 39-30 advantage.
WSU has won the last 12 meetings since MSU's memorable home win over the Shockers to clinch the MVC regular-season crown on Feb. 26, 2011. The Bears are 6-24 all-time in Wichita and have lost five straight at Koch Arena.
In the most-recent meeting between the teams, MSU got 14 points and 8 rebounds from
Obediah Church with fellow freshmen
Jarred Dixon and
Ryan Kreklow pitching in 8 points apiece in a 99-68 loss at Koch Arena on Feb. 18, 2016. Zach Brown led four Shockers in double figures with 16 points.
Scouting the Shockers
Tenth-head coach Gregg Marshall returns nine lettermen and two starters from a 26-9 club that went 16-2 (first) in the MVC last season and advanced to the NCAA Tourney.
Sophomore Markis McDuffie (F, 6-8) leads the Shockers with 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while junior Dorral Willis (F, 6-9) averages 10.8 and 5.4 boards. Freshman Landry Shamet (G, 6-4) also averages 10.7 points with a team-high 46 3-pointers. WSU is scoring 81.7 points per game in addition to collecting 40.9 rebounds per night.
The Ten Count
- The regular-season finale between the Bears and Shockers at JQH Arena on Feb. 25 was announced Monday as a nationally-featured game on ESPN or ESPN2, starting at 11 a.m.
- Alize Johnson (Jr., Williamsport, Pa.) continues to lead the league with 10.6 rebounds per game. He ranks 9th nationally in double-doubles (14) and 13th in rebounds per game. He has 17 double-figure rebound games this year.
- MSU has matched or out-rebounded 11 of 12 league foes this season. Saturday's 32-28 rebounding edge by Evansville made the Aces the first team to out-rebound the Bears since Dec. 22 (#23 USC). MSU is 15-3 this season when controlling the glass.
- MSU's junior class has accounted for 38.1 points per game and 50.7 percent of its points this season. The youthful Bears have also averaged 22.0 points per game from their sophomore players -- 29.3 percent of their offense.
- Austin Ruder (Jr., Nixa, Mo.) has started the last 5 games for MSU, during which he has 11 threes (2.2 per game).
- Obediah Church (So., Springfield, Ill.) continues to lead the MVC in blocked shots (51) and now ranks 32nd nationally in blocks per game (2.22). He has surpassed his freshman season total and ranks 6th on MSU's career blocks list.
- Paced by super sophomore Jarred Dixon (Kansas City, Mo.), Missouri State's bench has outscored its opponents' reserves in 22 of 25 games this season. Dixon is coming off three straight double-figure games in reserve, including a team-high 16 points at Evansville on Saturday.
- MSU is shooting exactly 100 points better from the foul line on the road (.772) than at home (.672) this season.
- Wichita State ranks No. 3 nationally in scoring margin (19.1), 6th in rebound margin (8.8) and 7th in FG% def (.380).
- Since MSU's last win in Wichita (1/9/11), the Shockers are 90-7 at Koch Arena and 95-8 in all home games in that span, including contests played at Intrust Bank Arena.
