Brewer, Coonfield Score in Bears’ 2-1 Victory

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD – After nearly a two-hour lightning delay, the Missouri State women's soccer team (1-4-1) came out on fire, attacking Omaha (2-3) to take the 2-1 victory over the Mavericks.

In the first 51 seconds of the match, Omaha had a one-on-one situation with a Bear taking a shot at MSU goalkeeper Evan Stamp. Stamp jumped on the ball as momentum quickly changed in favor of the Bears.

Molly Brewer took the first shot of the match for the Bears. Finding the back of the net, she collected her second goal of the season after teammate Rachel Catrell dribbled around her defender, giving Brewer the perfect angle.

The Bears managed to maintain momentum for a majority of the first half, only allowing four shots by the traveling Mavericks. In the 26th minute, Brewer fired a shot at Omaha's goalkeeper who came up with the save after sending the ball over the cross bar with her fingertips.

Brewer continued to push the ball at the Mavericks, connecting with teammate Ashley Coonfield. After Brewer slipped the ball across the box to an open Coonfield, the freshman was able to net her first collegiate goal.

Freshman Olina Einarsdottir found herself in a one-on-one situation with Omaha's keeper, less than two-yard from the mouth of the goal. Einarsdottir took the shot, sailing the ball less than five feet over the crossbar.

In the 74th minute of the match, Omaha's Emily Romero took a shot from 25 yards out, placing the ball in the hands of Stamp as she collected her third save of the night.

Omaha got on the board in the 83rd minute of the match when Izzy Anders kicked the ball through a pile of players.

The Bears will continue their home stand on Sunday (Sept. 11) against Central Arkansas at 1 p.m.
