Zimmerman Scores Late to Give Bears 1-0 Victory Over UCA

Box Score | Season Stats

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team (2-4-1) collected its second-consecutive victory after topping the visiting Central Arkansas Bears (5-3), 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 11).

"It has been a hard season for us," commented head coach Rob Brewer. "We had a pretty tough game on Friday night and to bounce back and have the energy to come back is huge for us."

The Bears pushed the ball to start the match, as Sidni Trotter headed the ball just high of the crossbar in the third minute off of a corner kick. In the next five minutes, Brooke Zimmerman would attempt to cross the ball from inside the box to her teammates but UCA's keeper jumped on top, preventing two scoring opportunities for MSU.

Nine minutes into the match, Rachel Catrell made a spin move around her defender, forcing the keeper to come out of the net. Catrell popped the ball up over the keeper, sending it just right of the post.

With less than eight minutes left in the first half, UCA pushed the ball at MSU in an attempt to put themselves on the board. Central Arkansas was in a breakaway situation when Ashley Tallerine jumped in front of the ball, making contact with it and sending it high into the air to eliminate a scoring opportunity.

In the 53rd minute, UCA charged MSU defenders but Trotter put herself between the ball and MSU's goalkeeper Evan Stamp until she could make her fourth save of the match.

UCA's Camille Bassett led the team with five shots, firing three of them at Stamp, including one in the 70th minute. Bassett was unable to convert for UCA after taking a shot and sending the ball five feet right of the post and out of bounds.

Momentum changed in favor of Missouri State in the 81st minute of the match when Kassie Flynn flipped in a throw-in pass, connecting with Zimmerman two yards out from the mouth of the goal, who bumped it in past UCA's keeper for the go-ahead goal.

In the 84th minute, Bassett fired Central Arkansas' final shot right into the hands of Stamp, making it her single-game and career-high ninth save of the match.

The Bears will conclude its four-game homestand next weekend when SIU Edwardsville (Sept. 16) and Southeast Missouri State (Sept. 18) travel to Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. Missouri State is looking to break the 17-year-old women's soccer attendance record of 905 at Friday's match.
