SPRINGFIELD – In his third season leading Missouri State's cross country squad, head coach Jordan Fife announced on Monday (Aug. 8) the Bears' 2016 schedule, which features four regular-season meets.
"I'm looking forward to our 2016 schedule as we have some familiar meets and a couple of new ones that present some exciting opportunities and competition," said Fife. "I'm anxious to see the fitness that the ladies bring back to campus this fall."
The Bears open the season at the Gabby Reuveni Early Bird, a 4-kilometer race through Forest Park in St. Louis, Mo., hosted by Washington University on Friday, Sept. 2.
For the second-straight year, MSU will travel to Joplin, Mo. for the Missouri Southern Stampede on Sept. 17. Last season, the Bears featured 14 runners at the meet and had three top-50 finishers out of 250 competitors including returners Jade Raynor and Jessica Allen.
October opens with the Bears competing in the 28th running of the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 1. The meet will feature over a combined 80 men's and women's collegiate programs from across the nation.
"Having run at this meet last year for the first time, our student-athletes will now have a better idea what to expect and how to navigate some of the narrow portions of the course that caused us some problems last year," said Fife.
The Bears will then finish the regular season at the Bradley Pink Classic on Oct. 14, hosted by Missouri Valley Conference opponent Bradley.
This year's MVC Cross Country Championships will be hosted by the UNI Panthers at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Oct. 29. MSU improved two spots at the 2015 championships to finish eighth and Fife looks to see even more improvement this season.
"As always, our main focus is on the MVC Championships and continuing to take another step forward with our performance at that meet," commented Fife. "Progress is our top priority."
The Bears will finish the 2016 season at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa City, Iowa on Nov. 11. Last season, seven student-athletes traveled to the regional meet and alumna Cindy Forde finished first for the Bears after clocking in the 19th-fastest 6-kilometer time in MSU program history with 22:02.6.
