PEORIA, Ill. -- In a field packed with regionally-ranked teams, Missouri State's women's cross country squad put together a solid effort here Friday afternoon at the Bradley Pink Classic as MSU junior
Jessica Allen turned in an impressive six-kilometer performance to help the Bears to a 25th-place team finish.
Â
Out of 266 entries, Allen's time of 21:44.2 was good enough for 35th place in the Red (highest level) Division I women's race, and just over a minute behind individual race winner Tayler Tuttle of Colorado (20:38.9). At the traditional five-kilometer mark, Allen was at a blistering 18:09 pace, which would have been just four seconds off her PR at that distance. Her six-kilometer performance ranks as the 13th-fastest in program history and the team's best mark at that distance since 2010.
Â
"It was encouraging to see Jessi battle in the front pack of the race," said head coach
Jordan Fife. "We've known she was ready to take that next step in her racing career, and I was glad to see that out of her today."
Also scoring for MSU in the Red Race were Savannah Aleckson (22:42.8),
Jordyn Capra (22:54.2),
Jade Raynor (23:34.3) and
Mercedes Robinson (23:42.4), while
Erica Wollmering (25:40.7) also ran in the faster head. Capra, a freshman, turned in an 18:59 over the first five kilometers of the course at Newman Golf Course, which was her best collegiate time to date at that distance.
Thirty-one Division I teams scored in the Red Race with fellow Missouri Valley Conference foes UNI finishing third, host Bradley taking fourth, Loyola taking 17th, Illinois State earning 19th and Southern Illinois finishing just ahead of MSU in 22nd place. Colorado (54) took the overall team title, just ahead of Northern Illinois (108) and UNI (159).
Â
"The team place wasn't what where we hoped it would be," said Fife. "We had a mixed bag with a couple of off days among our top five, but so many of our runners adjusted well to the 6k race."
Seven Missouri State runners also participated in the White Race, where freshman
Danielle Bohannon posted a time of 24:03.0 to finish 31st, just ahead of teammate
Renae Buschling (24:03.7) who was 32nd, and
Claire Schwarz (24:26.7) who came in 38th in the field of 179 runners. The Bears tallied 171 team points and got support from
Alyson Jones (54th) and
Madeline Saville (66th) in the preliminary 6K race.
Â
After today's regular-season finale, Fife's squad will now turn its attention to the Missouri Valley Conference meet which takes place on Oct. 29 in Cedar Falls. The Bears will conclude the 2016 season on Nov. 11 at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa City, Iowa.
