FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Eight of Missouri State's 11 runners recorded personal bests, and the Bears finished in 12th place Saturday at the national-scale Chile Pepper Festival five-kilometer event here.
Â
There were 18 Division I teams entered in the event, but 492 runners from all levels in the women's intercollegiate race.
Jessica Allen was Missouri State's top finisher, crossing the line with a time 18:05.8 -- just a tenth of a second off her personal best set two weeks ago in Joplin.
Â
Savannah Aleckson finished 85th overall with a PR of 18:12.3 for MSU, and
Jade Raynor posted a mark of 18:48.5 to finish 154th.
Â
"Savannah ran a strong No. 2 for us and all but three of the ladies had lifetime bests," said MSU coach
Jordan Fife. "We had a good day and several great individual efforts by our team."
Â
MSU got its first glimpse of some conference opponents at the meet with preseason Valley favorite Wichita State finishing fourth, and Drake finishing just behind the Bears in 13th place. Fife said he was pleased with his team's progress as it prepares for the Oct. 29 league meet in Cedar Falls.
Â
"It was very nice to see us ahead of so many Division I teams," he said. "We know how tough the conference meet will be in a month, and we have to keep the momentum going."
Â
Missouri State wraps its regular-season schedule on Oct. 14 at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill.
