Four Bears Set to Begin Professional Baseball Careers

June 22, 2015

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Four Missouri State baseball standouts have reached contractual agreements and are set to begin their professional careers after being selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

First-round pick Jon Harris agreed to terms with Toronto after the Blue Jays selected the right-handed pitcher 29th overall in the June 9 draft, while fellow MSU juniors Matt Hall and Tate Matheny followed suit by reaching terms with Detroit and Boston, respectively. Senior shortstop Joey Hawkins has also inked a deal with St. Louis after being selected in the 40th round by the Cardinals.

Harris is expected to begin his pro career with the Blue Jays' Northwoods League (short-season, Class A) club in Vancouver, while Matheny will start his career with Boston's New York-Penn League (short-season, Class A) affiliate in Lowell, Mass. Hall has been assigned to the Tigers' Rookie-level Gulf Coast League club, and Hawkins is still awaiting word on his initial professional assignment.

The four signees bring the Bears' total number of professional signings to 133 over the 52-year history of Missouri State's varsity program, including 113 under head coach Keith Guttin.
