BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - The Missouri State men's golf team fired its best round of the season - a 1-over-par 289 - on the final day of the ORU Shootout to finish second overall Tuesday at Forest Ridge Golf Club.

Junior Joey Johnson sparked the Bears' effort with a season-low 2-under-par 70, tying for second individually at 2-over 146 for the tournament. Classmate Mitch Mather carded a 70 of his own, his second under-par round of the spring. Missouri State finished 27-over 603 after Northern Iowa used a tournament-best 4-under 284, charging all the way from a tie for fifth place following the first round, to claim the team title with a 24-over 600.

Johnson's final-round 70 on the 6,826-yard course is his fourth sub-par round of the season, and included five birdies to lead the tournament field with eight overall. He was also 4-under for the week on par 4s, pacing the field in that category. Mather had two birdies on the day and an eagle for the Bears. The Lebanon, Mo., native holed out from 148 yards on the par-4 sixth hole to help himself tie for fourth overall at 3-over-par 147 for the tournament.

MSU's season-low team round is one stroke better than its previous mark of 290, achieved twice this season, the last time coming in the first round of the UALR First Tee Collegiate on March 30.

"I've been pleased with our progression this spring," Missouri State head coach Neal Stafford said. "We are close to putting a complete tournament together. The guys battled this week and we played well in contention today."

Senior Mark Karlsen shot a 3-over 75 Tuesday to tie for 18th at 10-over 154. He made 24 pars, two off of the tournament lead.

Junior Brik Brauburger shaved five strokes off of his first-round score to come up with a 77 and finish at 15-over 159. Brauburger tied for the tournament lead, going 4-under on par-5s for the week. Freshman Brian Rogers, playing as an individual, tied with Brauburger following a 6-over 78.

Classmate Brad Carpenter rebounded from an 86 Monday to shoot the Bears' second-best round of the day, a 2-over 74. He finished tied for 51st at 16-over 160.

David Wicks of Midland Community College earned individual medalist honors with matching rounds of 72 for even-par 144. Tournament-host Oral Roberts finished third in the team standings behind Missouri State at 36-over 612, while Omaha and Midland tied for fourth at 38-over 614.

The Bears have two weeks before hosting the MVC championship at The Club at Porto Cima in Sunrise Beach, Mo., April 27-28.
