Lady Bears Top Lyon College in Exhibition Opener, 92-45

SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State got production from all 13 members of its roster Monday afternoon as the Lady Bears opened the exhibition season with a 92-45 victory over Lyon College at JQH Arena. Twelve players scored for MSU, with four finishing in double figures, and everyone played between 13 and 18 minutes in a balanced effort.

The Lady Bears out-scored the Scots by at least six points in each quarter of the new women's basketball format of four 10-minute periods, taking the lead for good with a 9-0 run to lead 12-5 with 3:40 remaining in the first period. MSU closed the quarter with a 20-11 lead, and Hillary Chvatal scored with 4:59 left before halftime to begin a 10-0 run that used just 2:28 off the game clock as the Lady Bears built a 37-21 halftime advantage.

Missouri State exploded for 29 points in the third quarter, opening the second half on a 16-2 run and shooting 12-for-17 from the field while connecting on all four 3-point attempts.

MSU's Lee Ann Polowy hit a triple just over a minute into the final period to put the Lady Bears ahead by 30 points at 68-38, and the Lady Bears out-scored the Scots 26-7 in the fourth.

Tyonna Snow led all players with 13 points and four steals, and Lexi Hughes, Rachel Swartz and Polowy added 11 apiece. Hughes and Polowy each made three treys, as MSU finished 9-for-22 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Bears owned a 44-33 rebounding margin, with freshman guards Danielle Gitzen (12) and Riley Rose (6) leading the way. Freshman Grace Vander Wiede handed out three assists, sharing the team lead with Kenzie Williams, as 11 players combined for MSU's 17 team assists.

Missouri State shot 49.3 percent for the game and held Lyon to 17-for-52 (.352) overall, forcing 24 turnovers while committing only seven.

Missouri State concludes exhibition play Sunday at 2:05 p.m. against Quincy and opens the regular season Nov. 13 at 7:05 p.m. against Missouri at JQH Arena.
