SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State cross country team heads to Fayetteville to compete in its third race of the season on Saturday (Oct. 3) at 10:20 a.m. at the 27th annual Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Head coach Jordan Fife has seen many improvements this season, and expects to see more this weekend.
"We are excited to get the opportunity to compete again this weekend," said Fife. "Over the last several workouts, we have been excelling and there is potential for big breakthroughs this weekend. This will be a fast course with great running conditions and even better competition."
This will be MSU's third meet of the 2015 season. The Chile Pepper Festival will host approximately 5,300 runners and over 5,000 spectators this weekend. Ten different races will be run over a seven and a half hour period of time. MSU will be competing alongside top-Division I competitors such as Arkansas, Texas Tech, and Louisiana State, who had top-10 team finishes last season at the Chile Pepper Festival. Missouri Valley Conference schools, Drake and Wichita State, will also be in the mix.
"This race will give the girls a good feel for what the conference tournament will be like," Fife said. "It will be good for us to see where we stack up against Drake and Wichita State at this point in the season."
Senior Cindy Forde led the pack of Bears at the Missouri Southern Stampede (Sept. 19), finishing 23rd overall (8th in Division I) with a time of 18:18.95, which broke her previous personal best of 19:12.80 that she recorded in October 2014. Forde takes the eighth spot in the MVC Cross Country Best List so far this season.
The Bears have two regular-season meets left this season, including tomorrow's meet, leading up to the MVC Championships in Evansville, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
