NORMAL, Ill. - The Missouri State men's golf team heads to the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, hosted by Illinois State at the Weibring Golf Club on Sunday and Monday.
The tournament consists of 54 holes with 36 being played Sunday, followed by a final 18 Monday. Competition begins with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start both days on the 6,915-yard, par-71 course.
Missouri State will face 14 teams in the event, including Bradley, Butler, Central Arkansas, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Drake, Evansville, Loyola, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Texas Pan-American and Western Illinois.
"We got off to a good start last week," said MSU coach Neal Stafford, "and hope to improve against a strong field this week."
The Missouri State lineup includes senior Mark Karlsen, juniors Joey Johnson, Mitch Mather and Brik Brauburger as well as freshman Brad Carpenter.
Competing in the No. 3 spot, Karlsen had a breakout performance last week at the season-opening Derek Dolenc Invitational in Edwardsville, Ill. He helped lead the Bears to a tie for second place as a team with a 54-hole score of 880. Individually, Karlsen fired a 3-under-par 213 to finish second. His second-round 69 was a career best and gave the Alleroed, Denmark, native a share of the tournament lead heading into the final day.
Mather shot a 2-over 218 in the No.-2 position, closing with a pair of even-par 72s to finish in a tie for eighth place.
Johnson was 8-over-par for the tournament last week. He shot a 224, complete with an even-par 72 in the final round to claim a tie for 22nd place as the Bears' No. 1.
Freshman Brad Carpenter performed well in his first collegiate event at SIUE. The Washington, Mo., native turned in a 10-over 226 to finish tied for 34th. His best 18-hole effort of 74 came in the second round.
Brauburger makes his 2014-15 debut this week after posting a 76.26 scoring average last season. He improved the mark by over two strokes from the previous year, and tied his career best with an opening-round 70 at the Argent Financial Classic is Choudrant, La., on March 3.
The Bears are looking for their best finish at the Weibring Intercollegiate since placing fourth overall in both 2011 and 2012. Last season, Missouri State tied for 12th out of 15 schools with a three-round score of 896.
