SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (1-1-0) dropped a hard-fought match to visiting North Texas (2-0-0) at Plaster Field on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. A late goal by North Texas was the decisive blow.
"I thought everyone battled out there today," said head coach Rob Brewer. "We can learn from our mistakes as we move forward in the season. We play with great urgency after the goal and need to continue to show urgency even when we are not trailing."
The Bears got out of the gates fast, controlling play at the onset. Michelle Mayne-Nicholls registered the first Bears' shot in the second minute of play. MSU and North Texas would trade shots the remainder of the half with both team recording five first-half shots. Missouri State's Chelsea Voet made the only save necessary in the half.
The Bears again started fast in the second half. MSU earned the first two corners and Molly Brewer tallied the Bears' first shot on frame in the first 10 minute of the half.
The intensity began to ratchet up near the middle of the half as the teams battled for possession and the potential go-ahead goal. Following a Missouri State foul near midfield in the 83rd minute, UNT's Kelsey Hodges lined a shot into the upper reaches of the net for a goal off of the free kick.
The Bears' urgency kicked into high gear, trailing late in the match at home. MSU recorded a pair of shots in the waning seconds including Nia Williams' free kick on net with five ticks left on the clock.
Molly Brewer led all Bears with two shots in the game. The Bears were outshot in the match, 10-8.
Missouri State will play at Arkansas on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Plaster Field to play Nebraska-Omaha next Friday (Aug. 24) at 6:00 p.m.
