Wooden Named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week

Nov. 20, 2011

ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State sophomore quarterback Trevor Wooden (High Springs, Fla.) has been named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Sunday (Nov. 20).

Wooden engineered an amazing MSU comeback Saturday at Youngstown State to overcome a 17-point deficit on the road and lead the Bears to a 38-34 victory of the playoff-minded Penguins.

He compiled 309 yards in total offense to lift the Bears past YSU for the fourth straight year. He rushed 18 tmes for 121 yards and two second-half touchdowns, while passing for 188 yards and a pair of TDs in the win. His TD pass to Cadarrius Dotson with 10 seconds remaining in the game secured the win.

Wooden, who also earned the award on Oct. 22 for his efforts in leading MSU to a road win at Western Illinois, became the first MSU quarterback to rush for 100 yards twice in a season since 1989 when DeAndre Smith had four 100-yard rushing performances. He is also the first Missouri State player to win MVFC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice in a season since Cody Kirby in 2007.

He ended his first season as MSU signal caller with 2,420 yards of total offense and accounted for 24 of the team's 30 touchdowns. He passed for 1,853 yards and 17 TDs, while rushing for a team-high 567 yards and 7 TDs.

Also recognized by the league on Sunday were: Defense Player of the Week L.J. Fort, UNI; Special Teams Player of the Week Tyler Sievertsen, UNI; Newcomer of the Week Jewel Hampton, Southern Illinois.

The Bears capped the 2011 campaign with a 2-9 record, but ended the year with wins in two of their last four games, including a pair of narrow home losses down the stretch. The Bears' 2-6 league record tied them for seventh place in the MFVC, two spots higher than predicted in the league's preseason poll.

MVFC postseason awards will be released on the following schedule: All-MVFC Team (Monday, Nov. 28), MVFC All-Newcomer Team (Tuesday, Nov. 29), and MVFC All-Academic Team (Wednesday, Nov. 30).
