Wichita State Blanks Baseball Bears Again, 8-0

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State got a complete-game two-hitter from Tim Kelley to earn an 8-0 victory over the Missouri State baseball team Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

Kelley (9-2) struck out 10 and allowed just four baserunners on singles by Aaron Conway and Barrett Noirfalise and a pair of walk issued to Kevin Medrano. Two of those runners were erased on the basepaths by a caught stealing and a double play, leaving Medrano stuck in the on deck circle when the game ended without a fourth chance to extend his hitting streak.

Medrano went 0-for-1 with two walks, ending his hitting streak at 29 games, one shy of Brayden Drake’s school record. He entered the day with the fourth longest active streak in Division I and seventh longest in the nation this season.

A year after holding the Shockers to one hit over eight innings, Aaron Meade took a one-hitter into the fourth before a walk and another single set up Travis Bennett’s RBI base hit to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Meade (2-4) made his 39th career start in the game, tying for fourth in school history.

WSU added two more in the fifth, opening with three consecutive singles and scoring on Cody’s Lassley’s RBI single and Johnny Coy’s sacrifice fly.

Bennett hit another RBI single in the eighth and Ryan Jones scored from second on a wild pitch before the Shockers managed to generate three more runs after the bases were empty with two outs, all coming on Lassley’s three-run double into the left field corner.

Wichita State improved to 34-17 overall and 15-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bears are 18-30 and 4-13 in the league.

Game three of the series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
