Second round play at the 2009 Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial was suspended at approximately 5:00 p.m. Monday (Sept. 21) after heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo. Most players in the field had four to five holes remaining in their second rounds when play was halted. The plan is to finish the second round at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday and then continue immediately with the third and final round.
Arkansas State led the 15-team field after the first round, firing a 301 to hold a five-shot advantage on Central Arkansas and seven shots ahead of the host Bears. UCA posted 306, MSU 308, then Drake at 309 and Bradley at 315 to round out the top five. Next came Southern Illinois with 316, UNI 317, South Dakota State 318, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 319, UMKC 324, Oklahoma City 325, SIU-Edwardsville 330, Creighton 332, Cal State Fullerton 340 and South Dakota 352.
Jennifer Welch of ASU fired an even-par 72 to take the individual lead, while Bears' freshman Heather Smith and Central Arkansas' C.J. Bobbitt were tied for second with 73's. For MSU, sophomore Kelsey Welber was tied for fifth with 75, freshman Hermine Greyling tied for 22nd with 79, sophomore Catherine Dolan tied for 36th with 81 and senior Stacey Rodger tied for 47th with 83. Four Bears played as individuals, not able to count toward the team score -- freshman Emma Clegg shot 80, sophomores Emily Matthews and Emily Potts had 81, and freshman Amy Bowen 96.
One of the highlights of the day was the third career hole-in-one for Rebecca Sorenson of Central Arkansas. She holed her tee shot on the 147-yard sixth hole on her way to an opening-round 74.
