Brayden Drake,
Buddy Baumann and
Kevin Medrano are this year’s winners of Missouri State’s baseball team awards as voted on by their teammates. Drake is the A.E. “Ted” Willis Most Valuable Player, Baumann is the Dave Dickensheet Pitcher of the Year and Medrano the Danny Cook Rookie of the Year.
A senior from Webb City, Drake is the 2009 Joe Carter Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and a Collegiate Baseball third-team All-American. He hit .414 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs, earned MVC Player of the Week honors three times in 2009 and owns school records with 67 career doubles and a 30-game hit streak that lasted from April 2008 through March 2009.
Baumann is a Collegiate Baseball second-team All-American, MVC Pitcher of the Year and CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team selection. The Rogersville, Mo., native is the third pitcher in school history to win 11 games in a season, going 11-1 with a 3.23 ERA, and his 101 strikeouts in 2009 rank fifth all-time at MSU. The southpaw held opponents to a .220 batting average this year and is eighth in MSU history with 215 career strikeouts.
Medrano is the MVC Freshman of the Year and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American. The Lee’s Summit, Mo., product hit .329 with three homers and 40 RBIs in his first season as a Bear, ranking fourth among freshmen in school history with 76 hits and third with 1.41 hits per game. Medrano started 52 of 54 games, including 44 at second base where he posted a .980 fielding percentage. In MVC play, Medrano fielded .990 and led all league players with 37 hits to go with a .374 average.
