Baseball Bears Silence ORU Bats in Doubleheader Sweep

Missouri State pitchers allowed five hits and three runs while striking out 24 Oral Roberts hitters Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field, sweeping a doubleheader with the Golden Eagles by scores of 10-1 and 3-2. Starters Tim Clubb and Buddy Baumann picked up the wins, combining for 17 innings and 22 strikeouts.

The two victories improved MSU’s record to 13-11. ORU fell to 8-7.

The Bears host No. 9 Arkansas Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a rematch of a March 25 contest the Razorbacks won in Fayetteville.

Game 1 Recap

Clubb (2-1) struck out eight while allowing just two singles and an unearned run over eight innings, and the offense broke the game open late after entering the fifth in a 1-1 tie to take game one by a final of 10-1.

After the Golden Eagles managed an unearned run in the top of the third, freshman Trevor Rogers led off the home half of the inning with MSU’s first hit of the game, a double off the wall in right. ORU’s Jerry Sullivan (2-3) struck out the next two hitters before Aaron Conway drove in Rogers to tie the game.

Chris Playter gave the Bears the 2-1 lead by opening the fifth inning with his first home run of the year, and MSU threatened again in the sixth after one-out singles by Kevin Medrano and Ben Carlson put runners on the corners. Brayden Drake walked to load the bases, and Dallas Hord bounced a two-run single through the left side for a 4-1 lead. Drake scored on a wild pitch for the team’s fifth run.

The Bears opened the sixth with three straight hits, the third a run-scoring double by Medrano. Drake drove in Conway with an RBI ground out, but finished 0-for-4 with a walk in the game to end his hitting streak at a school-record 30 games. Medrano scored on a balk before the inning ended with the Bears leading 8-1.

Conway smacked his second triple of the game in the eighth to score Travis McComack after a leadoff walk, then scored on a passed ball for MSU’s 10th run. He finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Game 2 Recap

Baumann (5-0) struck out eight of the first 10 batters he faced and fanned a career-high 14 ORU hitters over nine innings in the Bears’ 3-2 win. The junior southpaw’s strikeout total was the seventh highest in school history and most since Ross Detwiler whiffed 14 on May 11, 2007. Baumann fanned multiple hitters in five of his nine innings, walked none and allowed two runs on three hits.

Hord led off the second with a double and scored on Playter’s single for the game’s first run. Playter scored on Tyler Ryun’s grounder to second for a 2-0 lead.

Carlson’s leadoff triple in the third turned into a run, but ORU’s Seth Furnamek got it back in the fourth with a solo homer. The score remained 3-1 MSU until Johnny Roberts connected on a solo homer with one out in the eighth to pull the Golden Eagles within a run.
