Missouri State lefthander
Buddy Baumann and first baseman
Ben Carlson have been selected as this week’s Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday.
In his first appearance of the season, Baumann was dominant in Missouri State’s 3-2 win over Nebraska on Sunday. The southpaw hurled five innings before reaching his pitch count, fanning five Cornhuskers while giving up just one hit and two walks. His hit came against the second batter of the game, and only one runner advanced beyond first base for NU.
The Rogersville native left the game with a 2-0 lead and earned the win for the Bears. He retired 11 of the final 13 hitters he saw and faced the minimum in his last four innings.
Carlson earned MVP honors at Sam Houston State’s Bearkat Baseball Classic, hitting .500 (10-20) with 11 RBIs and four runs scored. He had two doubles and a home run for a .750 slugging average while being walked and hit by a pitch for a .545 on base percentage.
The Topeka, Kan., native began the tournament with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning Friday against Nebraska on the way to a 2-for-5 day. Then on Saturday, he went 4-for-6 with seven RBIs and two runs scored against St. Mary’s, the most RBIs for a Bear in a game since 2001. All four of his hits drove in runners, the first putting MSU ahead for good.
Carlson went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Saturday’s nightcap versus Sam Houston State, and added a hit and an RBI in Sunday’s win over Nebraska.
The Bears open the home season Wednesday with a 3 p.m. contest against Central Arkansas at Hammons Field.
