CONWAY, Ark. -- The Missouri State women's soccer team passed its first test of the 2008 season Thursday, outshooting host Central Arkansas 13-3 and landing a 3-0 victory in the team's first exhibition match.
Junior Jenna Laughlin tallied the game's first goal in the 14th minute with senior Allison Osmundson notching the assist. The Bears' 1-0 lead held until the 65th minute when Laughlin found the back of the net again on an unassisted strike. Senior Caroline Sweeney added an unassisted insurance goal in the 69th minute to close out the game's scoring.
The Bears put nine shots on goal, compared to one for UCA, and were awarded seven corner kicks on the night. The team's offensive attack led to Sweeney's goal, and 13th-year Head Coach Rob Brewer noted the effort of players like senior Meghan Cassady who also attacked well.
"Overall, it was a very positive night for our first game," said Brewer. "Meghan Cassady was very dangerous on attack, and helped us keep good possessions. Jenna Laughlin had two quality goals, and Caroline Sweeney scored on a goal that was the result of some hard attacking work."
All 24 players on the trip saw action for the Bears, including four players in goal. Brewer also was encouraged by the play of the teams' newcomers.
"Our freshmen looked solid, and we expect them to continue to improve," he said. "Tara Bailes and Kelsey Finders were outstanding tonight, and they both stepped up at various times."
