Carrera, Cronly receive Valley academic honors

Missouri State senior Damaso Carrera is one of just seven student-athletes on the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete First Team, while teammate John Cronly received honorable mention to the squad.

Carrera, a native of Zaragoza, Spain, received honorable mention the past two seasons, but moved up to the first team in his final year in a vote of the league's sports information directors.  He has maintained a 3.21 grade-point average while majoring in International Business and attending graduate school this past season.  Carrera tied for 32nd in his final MVC Championship last month in Davenport, Iowa, and finished the season with a 75.93 scoring average.  He set the school 54-hole scoring mark back in April at the Arkansas State Indian Classic, firing 70-69-69--208 to break the previous record by a stroke.

Others on the first team included Blake Driskell and Todd Obergoenner of Southern Illinois; Matt Hunsaker of Evansville; Brook Maher of UNI; Matt Kouri of Creighton; and Zach Wanken of Bradley.

Cronly, a native of East Hagbourne, Oxfordshire, England, was one of four players to receive honorable mention.  He has compiled a 3.67 GPA while majoring in Journalism.  Cronly finished with a 76.76 scoring average in his senior season and finished second at the Branson Creek Invitational in his third-last tournament.

Others receiving honorable mention were Ryan Linsner of Evansville, Ben Murphy of Illinois State and Ty Sanders of Wichita State.
