Walk-Off Home Run Dooms Bears Against Evansville

Krista Price’s walk-off home run propelled Evansville to a 3-2 Missouri Valley Conference win over Missouri State, Saturday, at Evansville, Ind. The contest was delayed nearly five hours due to inclement weather. The softball Bears are now 21-13 and 8-8 in MVC action.

Missouri State tied the game at 2-2 with a run in its half of the seventh when freshman Jenna Schwark singled home junior Brooke Kempker, who doubled with one out. Price’s heroics erased the solid pitching effort of Bears’ senior Melissa Porche (12-10), who hurled her 17th complete game. Porche allowed eight hits and struck out four Evansville batters.

Evansville scored a run in the bottom of the third before the Bears tied the game in the fifth. Kempker singled to start the frame and scored on junior Jana Shewmaker’s double to right center. Kempker was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored to lead the Bears offensively. Junior Jessie Smith doubled in the fourth to account for the lone other MSU hit.

MSU will face Evansville, Sunday (April 20) in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
