The Missouri State baseball team scored seven runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 9-4 non-conference victory over Arkansas State Wednesday afternoon at Hammons Field.
Brayden Drake went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Nolan Keane had three hits and scored three times to help the Bears earn their fourth win in a row and improve to 12-4 on the season. ASU fell to 11-8.
Junior Kyle Boschert got the start for MSU and took a no-hitter into the third before giving up an infield single, and had a shutout in the fifth when the Indians scored three unearned runs. Boschert went six frames on the day with five strikeouts to run his record to 2-0.
The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the first after two walks and a Ben Woodbury single. Drake drove the first run home with an RBI single, and ASU starter Jett Jones hit Ben Carlson to force in a second run. Ryan Mantle drove in a third run with a ground out to Jones and Dallas Hord poked a two-out, two-run single as the Bears batted around in the five-run first.
The scoring continued in the second when Keane tripled home Aaron Conway to knock Jones out of the game. Drake welcomed reliever Andy Ferguson with an RBI double that scored Keane and made it a 7-0 game through two innings, and Keane scored again on a wild pitch in the fourth for an 8-0 score.
Ferguson hit Woodbury with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in MSU’s ninth run, but the Bears missed a chance for more after leaving the bases loaded.
ASU turned a leadoff double into a run in the eighth, but that was it against MSU’s bullpen trio of Jon Barnes, J.C. Casey and Matt Frevert.
The Bears open the Missouri Valley Conference season this weekend with a three-game set at home against Creighton. First pitch for game one is 3 p.m. Friday.
