SPRINGFIELD -- Derron Hobbs, a freshman guard on the Missouri State men’s basketball team, has made a decision this week to end his playing career with the Bears and return to his home in St. Louis at the end of this semester.
“We wish Derron the best in whatever direction he decides to go from here,” said Missouri State head coach Cuonzo Martin. “This was a decision that he made on his own and for his own reasons.”
Hobbs was hampered by an ankle sprain that forced him to miss the team’s first three regular season games before his return to action on November 28 against Utah. He scored three points in the Utah game with a pair of rebounds and an assist and followed that performance with a five-point outing against Arkansas-Little Rock on December 3. He played, but did not score in his only other game with the team on December 6 against Arkansas State.
“I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Martin gave me,” Hobbs said Thursday afternoon. “Because of some personal circumstances, I have made the decision to move on.”
The six-foot, 145-pound point guard is a product of Gateway Tech High School in St. Louis and did not travel with the team to Tulsa on Wednesday while finalizing his decision.
