The Missouri State field hockey team lost to Kent State, 2-1, in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Plaster Field. The loss drops the Bears to 1-10, 0-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while Kent State imroves to 7-3, 2-1 in the MAC.
Missouri State scored first in the second half after both teams went into halftime scoreless. Sophomore Melissa Lantz scored her first goal of the season off a designed corner play with a pass from Alyssa Hile at 47:50.
The Bears defense held Kent State's offensive players in the last minutes of the game. Freshman Sarah Cusick broke up two back-to-back Kent State corners for the Bears while junior Sandy Fulkerson also added her fifth defensive save of the season.
The Bears senior goalkeeper Kim Kinsella had 10 saves in the second half, only allowing the tieing goal as the clock expired. Kent State's Charlotte Muller scored off a penalty corner. Kinsella had 23 saves total against Kent State, pushing her season total to 123.
The Bears almost scored in the first overtime with two back-to-back shots by Melissa Millin and Sarah Johnson as the clock expired.
Kent State's Rachel Miller scored 42 seconds into the second overtime for the confernce win. Stephanie Bernthalpassed up the field to Miller. Miller then drove past Kinsella, putting the ball in the back right corner.
The Bears will play Ohio Sunday Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. at Plaster Field.
