The Missouri State men’s golf team wrapped up a 13th place finish Tuesday afternoon at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. Freshman Jack Courington posted a career-best round for the second straight day to lead the Bears.
The Bears shot 304 as a team Tuesday to finish with a 913 total, 25 strokes behind first-place Houston. After posting a 302 opening-round total, MSU shot 307 in round two on Monday and entered the final round tied with South Dakota State and UMKC for 11th overall.
Courington who shot a 74 in Monday’s opening round, bested his previous career low by two strokes with a final round 72 to tie for 11th place overall. Sophomore Jay McBride carded 75-76-75--226 to earn a tie for 27th, while senior Damaso Carrera fired a 79 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 53rd after turning in two rounds of 76 on Monday. Sophomores Scott Glenn (77-79-78--234) and Ryan Weinhaus (80-82-79--241) finished 67th and 86th, respectively.
Houston entered Tuesday’s competition tied for third, but captured a six-stroke victory after matching a tournament low with a final round 292. The Cougars were led by individual medalist Jordan Irwin (74-70-71--215), who won the event by two shots over North Texas’s Cole Howard (73-74-70--217).
Oral Roberts (295-301-298--894) and Kansas (298-292-304--894) tied for second place, while Kansas State, UC-Davis, South Dakota State, Nebraska, UNC-Wilmington, Western Kentucky and Cleveland State rounded out the top 10.
Next up, Missouri State will participate in the Jim Colbert Invitational, beginning next Monday, September 24, in Manhattan, Kan. The two-day event will kick off at 8 a.m. at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
