Wichita State handed the Missouri State baseball team its eighth consecutive loss with a 3-0 shutout of the Bears Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field in game two of the three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.
Last year’s MVC Pitcher of the Year Aaron Shafer (6-2) tossed seven scoreless frames to combine with Noah Booth for the shutout.
A hit by pitch, walk and Conor Gillaspie single loaded the bases for WSU with no outs in the fourth. Scott Carroll allowed just one run to score, tossing a wild pitch before Danny Jackson lined into a double play and Josh Workman grounded out to end the inning.
The 10th-ranked Shockers extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on a two-out error by the shortstop off the bat of Andy Dirks. Dusty Coleman and Damon Sublett scored on the play after a single and a walk, respectively.
Scott Carroll (3-1) suffered his first loss in eight starts this season, allowing an earned run and five hits over seven innings. Buddy Baumann pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth in relief of Carroll.
Missouri State was not without scoring chances, putting men on third base with less than two outs in the third and sixth frames, and loading the bases with two outs in the eighth, but the Bears hit just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 baserunners.
MSU also out-hit the Shockers by a 10-7 margin.
Matt Lawson had a 3-for-4 day at the plate and Kyle Paul and Tanner Mattson notched two hits each for the Missouri State offense.
Wichita State upped its record to 33-9 and 12-2 in the league. The Bears fell below .500 at 19-20 overall and 4-7 in MVC play, setting a new school record with their eighth straight loss.
Game three of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
