Shockers shut down baseball, 5-1

Wichita State’s Travis Banwart tossed seven shutout innings to lead the 10th-ranked Shockers to a 5-1 Missouri Valley Conference win over the Missouri State baseball team Friday night at Hammons Field in Springfield.

Wichita State took a 2-0 lead in the second when catcher Tyler Weber smashed a two-run homer over the bullpen in left, the first round-tripper surrendered by Missouri State pitching in 65.2 innings.

The Shocker lead grew to 5-0 in the sixth, taking advantage of three Missouri State errors and a passed ball to bring across three unearned runs. Conor Gillaspie and Josh Workman reached on errors to put runners on the corners before Andy Dirks pulled a single through right side to plate Gillaspie. Nolan Keane charged the ball but failed to field it cleanly, allowing Workman motor home from first and Dirks to reach third. Dirks then scored on the passed ball.

WSU’s Banwart improved to 7-2 on the mound this season, winning the marquee pitching matchup with Ross Detwiler by throwing seven shutout innings with four hits and seven strikeouts. Detwiler did Banwart one better in the strikeout department, but dropped to 4-3 after failing to receive any run support while on the bump.

Ryan Mantle prevented the shutout by leading off the eighth inning with a solo blast to left center for his fourth home run of the season.

Austin Todd pitched the final three innings for the Bears, limiting the Shocker lineup to one hit.

WSU improved to 32-9 overall and 11-2 in the MVC to remain alone in first place. The Bears evened their record at 19-19 overall and fell to 4-6 in the league.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m.
