Ben Carlson hit a pair of home runs and drove in five and Tim Clubb pitched five scoreless innings to lead Team Mattson in a 9-4 victory over Team Thomas in game one of the Missouri State baseball Fall World Series Wednesday afternoon at Hammons Field.
Team Mattson scored three in the first after leadoff man Aaron Conway walked, stole second and scored on Brayden Drake’s RBI double before Carlson hit the first of his two two-run homers.
Team Mattson added another four runs in the fifth highlighted by Josh Mazzola’s two-run single. Ryan Mantle added an RBI hit in the frame, and Team Thomas starting pitcher Buddy Baumann left after recording one out in the fifth.
Matt Welch had a 2-for-4 day for Team Mattson and Pat Doyle allowed an unearned run in three innings in relief of Clubb. Carlson belted another round-tripper in the seventh to cap Team Mattson’s scoring.
Chris Playter and Brian Brown each recorded two-hit days for Team Thomas, which scored three runs in the ninth for the final 9-4 margin.
