Wolkey named to All-MVC team

By virtue of her fifth-place finish at Saturday’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships, Missouri State sophomore Kristin Wolkey has been named All-MVC for the second straight year.

Wolkey turned in a 5K time of 18:03 to finish behind conference champion Ashley Anklam (17:36) of Drake, Chelsie Baldwin (17:40) of Wichita State, Traci Hawley (17:51) of UNI and Sarah Becker (17:58) of Wichita State. Wolkey’s time of 17:23.67 at the Memphis Twilight Classic on Oct. 7 eclipsed Casey Owen’s Missouri State record and remains the Valley’s top performance this season.

League champion Wichita State earned four places on the all-conference team to lead all Valley schools. Criteria for all-conference honors is a top-10 finish at the MVC Championships.

Wolkey was also one of three Bears named to the Valley’s Scholar-Athlete Team. The Overland Park, Kan. Native is majoring in accounting and has a 3.51 grade point average. Clarissa Codrington, a senior from Ann Arbor, Mich., and sophomore Jamie Vest were also tabbed MVC Scholar-Athletes. Codrington is a history major and has compiled a 3.52 GPA, while Vest, a Lebanon native, has registered a 3.34 GPA while working toward a degree in animal science.

The Scholar-Athlete Team recognizes both athletic and academic excellence, as those eligible must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.00 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing and they must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
