Sabrina Apker Scifres earned American Volleyball Coaches Association all-region and All-America honorable mention in 2004 for the Bears of coach Melissa Stokes. Apker, who came to Missouri State after a prep career as a four-sport athlete at Tremper High in Kenosha, Wis., started her last two seasons for the Bears. She also received all-Missouri Valley Conference first team honors as both a junior and senior as well as academic all-conference honors her last two seasons. A standout middle blocker, she logged spots in the top five in Missouri State single season blocks, block assists and blocks per game, and is the MSU career leader in blocks per game (1.57). She was the conference leader in blocks per game (1.72) in 2005 and ranked sixth in NCAA Division I in that category while setting a school record. She led MSU in kills in eight matches as a junior with a career high of 23 against SIU, and led the team in that category five times her senior year with a top effort of 21 against Utah. She had five double-figure block matches her senior year. She also ranks second all-time in MSU hitting percentage at .338, and finished her playing days fifth in career block assists (406) and eighth in total blocks (449). Apker led the Bears in kills as a junior and in both hitting percentage and blocks each of her last two seasons. She helped MSU to a first, two seconds and a third in regular season MVC competition with one MVC tourney title and two NCAA tournament appearances in her four seasons playing for the Bears. Earning her undergraduate degree in education from MSU in 2006, she returned to her native Wisconsin where she teaches second grade and also helps coach the volleyball team at Tremper High. She and her husband, former MSU placekicker Jon Scifres, have two children. Apker is a 2013 Kenosha Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
