Carly Deer was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for the Lady Bears of Coach Cheryl Burnett from 1997 to 2001 in one of the brightest eras in the history of the MSU women's program. Deer played on four straight NCAA Tournament teams at MSU, capped by an appearance in the 2001 NCAA Final Four in St. Louis. The 2001 Bears roared through matchups vs. Toledo, Rutgers, Duke and Washington before a loss to Purdue in the national semifinals. She won all-conference and academic all-conference recognition and was the 2001 MVC Defensive Player of the Year. She finished with 705 points, 619 rebounds 352 assists and 260 steals in 126 MSU games and was the first player in MSU basketball history to record a triple-double in a game with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Drake Jan. 23, 1999. Deer returned to MSU in 2007 to assist head coach Nyla Milleson for six seasons as MSU won the 2012 MVC regular season title. Deer currently provides color commentary on Lady Bears’ television broadcasts on ESPN3, ESPN+ and KOZL.
