Ethan Jacobsen joined the swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach in August 2018.

In three seasons spanning from 2020-23, Jacobsen assisted in three Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving titles for the MSU women. During that time, the first-ever MoState women's swimmer qualified for the NCAA Swimming Championships (Anna Miller, 2022), and the women's club garnered two MVC Women's Swimmer of the Year selections: Anna Miller (2021) and Libby Howell (2022). On the men's side, Jacobsen was a part of two runner-up finishes (2021, 2023) and a third-place finish (2022) in the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. During this time, the men's club featured the MAC Men’s Most Outstanding Senior three-straight years: Michael Claunch (2021), Pawel Krawczyk (2022) and Tyler Lewis (2023), and Dylan Moffatt secured MAC Men's Swimmer of the Year honors in 2022.

Jacobsen contributed to an unforgettable 2019-20 campaign as the Bears swept the MVC and MAC Championships. Earning their fourth-straight Valley title and 16th overall, the MSU women ran away with the crown after winning seven individual and three relay events to finish with 826.50 points. The MSU men were equally dominant at the MAC Championships, claiming 10 conference champion citations over the course of the meet. Standout senior Antonio Thomas was recognized as the MAC’s Co-Swimmer of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior.

He played a key role in the Bears' 2018-19 season sucess, highlighted by a MVC three-peat and another appearance on the national stage at the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The MSU women were crowned Valley champions for the third-straight season, totaling 759 points through the four-day event. At the conclusion of the meet, Alex Thorson was named Freshman Swimmer of the Year, marking the second year in a row the Bears took home the honor. The men’s season ended as runner-ups in the MAC Championships, but newcomer Pawel Krawczyk earned Freshman Swimmer of the Year laurels while seasoned veteran Artur Osvath add Most Outstanding Senior to his extensive resume. Blair Bish and Artur Osvath made return trips to the NCAA stage, where Bish garnered the highest individual placement in program history with a 10th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Jacobsen spent the last eight years on the Cedar Falls, Iowa-based coaching staff of the Black Hawk Area Swim Team, including the 2017-18 season as lead coach of the organization's senior group. The Normal, Ill., native joined the BLAST staff in 2010 while a student at the University of Northern Iowa, working as an assistant with the club's age groups for three years, before assuming the role of senior group assistant coach in 2013. He also led BLAST's age group 2 during the 2014-15 season and served as the club's lead development coach the last three years, overseeing a program that produced 18 state champions.

A 2014 UNI graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, Jacobsen attained Level 3 certification from the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). He earned Iowa Swimming's Age Group Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and was part of five straight BLAST staffs that earned coaching staff of the year recognition from Iowa Swimming. Jacobsen was named to the Team Iowa Zones coaching staff on two occasions, including 2016 when he was part of the Central MegaZone staff.
