Bears Rally Past Sycamores for Wynn Invitational Title

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A closing 4-0 run in the second set proved to be the turning point Saturday as Missouri State dominated the final two periods to beat visiting Indiana State by a 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-17) final and finish off a 3-0 weekend in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center.
The Sycamores (3-3) hit .538 in the first and led 23-21 in the second when Hannah Gardner tied the score with a kill and block and Chloe Judd followed with consecutive aces to pull the Bears (4-2) even with a 25-23 victory.
Mo State did not trail in the final two sets, hitting a combined .310 while limiting the Sycamores to .065 over that span for a dominant closing stretch.
In the third set, tournament MVP Rilynn Finley had two of her match-high 13 kills, while Brooke Eslinger had seven of her 22 digs. In the fourth, Eslinger added six more digs and the Bears forced ISU into eight errors.
Eslinger and Judd joined Finley on the all-tournament for Mo State, and Judd collected eight blocks against ISU. The Bears hit .215 compared to .176 for the Sycamores and owned advantages of 65-57 in digs and 11-5 in total blocks.
Mo State hits the road Sept. 10-12 at the Hawkeye Invitational. The Bears face Incarnate Word at 3 p.m. Thursday, Southern Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday and host Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday.
