Balanced Bears Top UIW in Four Sets

CORALVILLE, Iowa – Five players had at least eight kills Thursday afternoon and the Missouri State defense held Incarnate Word to a .093 attack efficiency for a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22) victory to open the Hawkeye Invitational at Xtream Arena.
Chloe Judd hit .524 and equaled a career high with 12 kills in Mo State's fourth consecutive win, Lexi Weinberg and Rilynn Finley had 11 each, Jenna Walters added eight kills, and Hannah Gardner finished one kill shy of a triple-double with 22 assists and 13 digs.
The Bears (5-2) tied a season high with 11 blocks and scooped 72 digs, led by 18 from reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week Brooke Eslinger.
Missouri State ran away from a 7-7 tie in the opening set, holding UIW (1-4) to a negative hitting percentage thanks in part to Hannah Redrow's four blocks and seven digs by Gardner.
The Cardinals used a 4-0 run from a 19-19 tie to put away the second, then Judd and Walters took over in the third, each finishing with five kills and no errors in the period. Walters had three winners in a 5-0 run to 11-5, Judd connected on three consecutive points to lead 16-9, and the Bears hit .319 in the set and held on after UIW spoiled five set points.
Mo State rattled off a 9-1 run in the fourth set to lead 18-9 and fended off another later UIW run, with Weinberg providing five kills and Finley and Judd supplying four each.
The Bears take on former Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday.
