Another Late Rally Leads to Sweep of MTSU for Baseball Bears

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State scored three runs in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field to complete its third come-from-behind win in as many games and secure a Conference USA sweep of Middle Tennessee by a 10-9 final.

The Bears improved to 15-7 overall and 5-1 in CUSA play while also moving to 10-0 at home for the first time since winning their first 13 home contests of the 2001 season.

Max Knight led off the decisive inning with a double, Logan Fyffe followed with a single for his third straight three-hit game, and Brant Kragel tied it at 8-8 with a single for tie his career high of three RBIs for the second consecutive game. Charlie Carter squeezed home Fyffe for the go-ahead run, and Bryce Cermenelli added insurance with an RBI single while extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Blue Raiders (12-12, 2-4) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first that was quickly erased in the bottom half on a Curry Sutherland RBI single, run-scoring error and two-run double by Fyffe for a 4-3 Mo State advantage.

MTSU answered with a three-run homer in the second for 6-4, Carter swatted a solo homer for 6-5 in the fourth, and the Blue Raiders hit back-to-back solo shots in the fifth to make it 8-5.

Kragel's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth cut the Missouri State deficit to 8-7, and senior Brock Lucas (3-2) entered as the Bears' fifth pitcher of the afternoon and tossed 3.1 innings while allowing just one run for the victory.

Max Knight made a diving catch on a sinking liner to left field for the final out, securing Curry Sutherland's first career save with the one batter faced.

Missouri State hosts Oklahoma State on Tuesday, March 24, in a game that has moved to 3 p.m. at Hammons Field. Tickets to all home games are available here.
