CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri State used a pair of big innings early in the game Tuesday to hand Missouri State a 13-6 loss at Capaha Field.
Â
After
Logan Fyffe put the Bears (10-6) on the board with a solo home run in the second, the Redhawks (11-7) plated 13 runs in the next two innings, using a variety of singles, three Missouri State errors and a pair of Joe Hall home runs to take a 13-1 lead after three frames, while 10 of those runs were unearned.
Â
Mo State kept SEMO off the board after that and slowly chipped away at the deficit, beginning with
Taeg Gollert's two-run homer in the fourth.
Â
Curry Sutherland added his team-leading seventh long ball in the seventh inning to make it 13-5, and
Carter Bergman led off the eighth with his sixth round-tripper of the season for the 13-6 final.
Â
Taeg Gollert added his 64
th career double in the ninth inning to move within three of Brayden Drake's school career record.
Â
For his part, Sutherland doubled in the fourth in addition to his homer to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and tossed 1.1 scoring innings with two strikeouts out of the bullpen, with all 15 of his pitches landing for strikes.
Â
In fact, the Bears' final five relievers –
Trent Ash,
Sam Maclaughlin, Sutherland,
Charlie Spoonhour and
Tommy Kramkowski – combined for six shutout innings and four hits allowed after the Redhawks' initial onslaught.
Â
The Bears head to Liberty (12-3) this weekend for their inaugural Conference USA series. First pitch Friday in Lynchburg is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central.
