SPRINGFIELD - No. 8 Missouri State men's soccer (9-1-2, 3-1-1) fell to Tulsa (4-4-4, 2-1-2), with a 2-1 scoreline on Sunday night in an American Conference matchup at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
The first half was all about the Golden Hurricane, who claimed control early with strong defense and sustained it over the course of the first 45 minutes. In the 16th minute, Tulsa's Luc Achermann-Stanfield found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Bears created chances with four shots overall in the first half but were unable to capitalize. Fifth-year Diego Real was the first Bear to tally a shot on goal in the 24th minute with a kick to the top right of the goal, but it was saved by Tulsa's Carlito Saylon.
Mo State kept fighting to create chances, and in the second half found a way to equalize off a set-piece in the 64th minute. Adrián Esteban set up classmate Martin Gasztos for his first goal as a Bear to tie the score, 1-1.
But less than four minutes later, Golden Hurricane Christian Mezas was right where he needed to be to score the game-winning goal. Gasztos created more chances to score with four more shots tallied by the 90th minute, but none were able to find the back of the net.
Ultimately the Bears' efforts were not enough, and Tulsa earned the victory 2-1, marking the Bears' first loss of the season.
Missouri State ended the night with 15 shots, with four on goal, while Tulsa ended with four shots, of which three were on goal. The Bears tallied 12 corner kicks, to Tulsa's one. Mo State made one save while the Golden Hurricane made three.
With three conference games remaining, the Bears remain tied with Charlotte for the league lead with 10 points. Tulsa (8 points) sits in third ahead of fourth-place Memphis (6 points) in the nine-team conference race.
The Bears are on the road for an American Conference matchup against Florida Atlantic next Sunday, Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. The game will air on ESPN+.
