Bears Softball Walks Off Bruins to Take Series Opener, Saturday Schedule Adjusted

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State softball (16-30, 13-9 MVC) took the first game of the series from Belmont (33-13, 16-6 MVC) with a 3-2 walk-off win in the eighth inning.

McKenzie Vaughan served as the role of hero on the night, launching the walk-off solo home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Bears to victory. The homer marked the 31st of her career, which tied the Missouri State career record held by Olivia Krehbiel

Belmont jumped out in front early in this one, knocking a solo homer in the first inning after a lengthy weather delay in Springfield. Both squads then settled in with just two combined baserunners in the second through fourth innings.

MoState finally broke through in the fifth inning following a leadoff double by Riley Baber. A sacrifice bunt from Alexis Perales then moved the pinch-runner Aubrey Johansen over to third, before Sofia King collected an RBI after reaching on fielder's choice that scored Johansen to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams answered in the sixth inning, with Belmont using a single and a triple to quickly respond in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Senior Chloe Merced then knocked a triple of her own to lead off the home half of the sixth, setting the Bears up with a great scoring opportunity. Following the sequence of a strike out, walk and another strike out, Perales sent an RBI single up the middle to know the game at 2-2.

With neither team able to end the game in the seventh, this one headed to extra innings. Vaughan and Co. worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, before the two-way star sent the first pitch she saw over the wall in center field with two outs on the board to secure the series-opening win for MoState.

Vaughan also earned the victory in the circle, her ninth win of the season, after tossing a complete game. In 8.0 innings of work, she scattered seven hits while allowing two earned runs and striking out three Bruins.

The Bears and Bruins will face off in game two tomorrow (April 26) with an adjusted start time of 12:00 p.m.
