Tulsa, Okla. - The Missouri State men's soccer team tied with the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (4-8-3, 3-3-1) with a 0-0 scoreline on Wednesday night. Both teams now have 10 points each in the American Conference standings with one match to go. Only the top six teams will advance to the conference tournament.
The Bears (6-5-3, 3-3-1) and the Golden Hurricanes opened the match on equal terms, with neither team able to shoot a shot on goal in the first half.
The Bears tried to push forward but every opportunity was denied by the strong defense from Tulsa. In the 17th minute, junior
Alex Matthews fired a shot that sailed just over the crossbar. Sixteen minutes later, sophomore Jarod Harlock came close with a similar attempt. Neither team's offense was able to turn their plays into real scoring chances, sending the match into halftime tied 0-0.
The Bears came out into the second half hungry to create more opportunities on the offensive end.
The Bears recorded the first shot on goal of the match when senior
Ollie Bate fired a low strike to the bottom center of the goal, but Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Carlito Saylon made the save. It was the first real scoring opportunity and set the tone for an assertive second half performance.
But Tulsa was not backing down. In the 55th minute the Golden Hurricanes created a scoring chance of their own. Senior
Will Lowry made an impeccable save with his feet from the shot on goal by Tulsa's Will Applegate.
Freshman
Harry Hogben was the next Bear in line with a shot on goal in the 70th minute saved again by Saylon.
Tulsa found ways to create chances in the later stages of the second half, pressing forward into the pitch. In the 76th minute, Golden Hurricane Luke Adams sent a shot to the top right corner, but Lowry once again came through with a brilliant save.
The final chance for the Bears came in the very last minute of play, but senior
Daniele Verdirosi was unable to get his shot past Saylon. As the clock hit the 90-minute mark, the match ended in a scoreless draw.
The Bears outshot Tulsa 9-7, with three shots on goal. The Bears tallied six corner kicks while the Golden Hurricanes collected four.
Head Coach Michael Seabolt was proud of the performance by his team.
"Congrats to the team tonight on getting a road result as Tulsa is always a tough opponent. Tulsa played the first half very well and the guys responded strongly in the second half, creating opportunities to score."
