SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -- The Missouri State men's golf team finished second Tuesday (Apr. 23) at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, recording its best league finish in 12 years. The Bears fired a final-round 285, matching their opening round of the tournament and the low round of the final day, to post an even-par 864 for the championship. They ended each day of the tournament in second place on the way to their best showing since also finishing second in 2012 in Hutchinson, Kan.
Individually, the senior duo of Hampus Wijkstrom and Max Kreikemeier finished fourth and sixth, respectively, while junior Ludvig Wijkstrom placed 14th. Hampus Wijkstrom earned all-conference honors after shooting 67-76-70--213, three-under-par in three trips around the par 72, 7060-yard layout at The Club at Porto Cima. The Saltsjobaden, Sweden native finished his only season at MSU after transferring from Augusta by shattering the school single-season scoring mark with a 70.22 average. Kreikemeier carded 73-70-71--214 and ended his standout career with three all-conference honors under his belt as well as numerous entries in the school record book.
Ludvig Wijkstrom tallied 72-75-71--218, while sophomore Christian Rischer shot 73-76-74--221 to tie for 21st and senior Eric Schuessler tied for 28th with 80-73-73--226.
Southern Illinois went wire-to-wire in claiming the team title and the NCAA regional berth that goes with it as the Salukis posted 278-287-291--856. The Bears finished four better than Valparaiso, which shot 868. Murray State and Drake finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with 879 and 883. Belmont placed sixth with 888, followed by Evansville (905), Illinois State (907), Bradley (911) and UNI (914).
