GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman – Missouri State overcame an 11-point second-half deficit and forced overtime here Monday against Boston College, but an Eagles' three-pointer with 4.1 seconds left in extra time sealed a 76-74 Eagles win in the Cayman Islands Classic semifinals.
Dez White scored a game-high 25 for the Bears (4-2), including 10 straight MoState points over the last 1:41 of regulation and first minute-plus of overtime.
Jalen Hampton added 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while Bears' big man
Michael Osei-Bonsu scored 13 points to go with 7 rebounds.
Boston College (5-1) got 18 points from Fred Payne and Donald Hand Jr. Elijah Strong added 13 points for the Eagles with two three-pointers in overtime, including the game-winner.
Early in the second half, White's elbow jumper made it a 34-33 game before Boston College went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to take its biggest lead of the night, 48-37, after a Jayden Hastings bucket off the glass.
Zaxton King and Osei-Bonsu then led a 7-0 MoState resurgence to get the deficit back to four at the 10-minute mark.
BC's lead then teetered between six and four until White posted five straight points, King hit a free throw, and
Chase Martin's steal and layup with 2:30 remaining in regulation tied the game, 58-58.
White scored MSU's last 6 points in regulation and pushed the Bears up by three, 64-61, on a pair of free throws with 29.6 seconds left in regulation before Hand's triple tied things up, 64-64, to force the extra period.
In OT, White kept the hot hand, scoring the first four points of the bonus period. Osei-Bonsu's then converted a put-back off a White miss to give the Bears a 70-64 lead with 2:52 to go. The scrappy ACC club then responded with a dunk by Hastings and a three by Strong to make it a one-point game,
That margin held until the final minute of overtime when Hand put the Eagles ahead 73-72 on a pair of free throws with less than 30 seconds to play. The tough call against the Bears didn't affect Osei-Bonsu who then flipped the script momentarily with his clutch layup for the Bears at the 15.5-second mark. which handed MoState its final lead, 74-73, just before Strong's buzzer beater won it for BC.
