SPRINGFIELD - No. 18-ranked Missouri State Bears men's soccer looks to put a pin on a perfect three-game road trip to start the season following wins against then-No. 14 Maryland and Kansas City. The Bears will head to the state of Oklahoma for a battle against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-2-0) on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. CT.
Head-To-Head Series
Missouri State and Tulsa meet for the 44th time dating back to 1981. Tulsa won the first matchup 4-1 at home and Missouri State defeated the Golden Hurricane 3-1 in Springfield later that year. Tulsa leads the all-time series 29-12-2, including wins in 11 of the last 15 matchups. The Bears have only won three of those 15 matches. The two sides battled to a draw in 2018 for the first time in 18 years.
Scouting the Golden Hurricane
- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane enter Tuesday's game 1-2-0 with a 1-0 loss to now-No. 12 Louisville, a 4-1 win over UTRGV and a 1-0 loss to No. 25 Oral Roberts on Friday.
- Malik Henry Scott, who has two career goals against the Bears, scored two goals against UTRGV to lead the team so far this season.
- Tulsa finished the 2022 season 10-5-2 and a 5-3-1 record in the American Athletic Conference. It was only shutout once all last season in a 3-0 loss to Florida International one game before beating Missouri State 3-0. Despite losing to Memphis in the AAC Tournament quarterfinal, Tulsa got a bid into the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Georgetown at home. The Golden Hurricane then hosted Creighton, who beat Missouri State in the first round. Tulsa met the same fate as the Bears, losing to the Bluejays 2-1 in the third round.
- The Golden Hurricane were picked to finish second out of nine teams in the 2023 American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, slotting in behind Florida International, which is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation. Tulsa received three of the nine first-place votes in the poll.
- Missouri State starts 2023 on a two-game winning streak, beating then-No.14 Maryland and Kansas City 1-0 on the road. Senior midfielder Jack Denton scored both goals and is single-handedly outscoring opponents 2-0.
- Missouri State is ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News Week 1 Polls. The Bears received eight votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll but are now ranked for the sixth-straight season going back to 2018.
- Tulsa is the only team to have beaten Missouri State in each of the last two regular seasons. Both matchups resulted in 3-0 victories for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa senior forward Mailk Henry-Scott has scored on MSU in back-to-back years. Senior midfielder Luke Jeffus also scored for Tulsa against the Bears in 2021.
- Goalkeeper Harry Townsend earned his third career MVC Defensive Player of the Week Award last week after he shut out No. 14 Maryland. A strong Bears defense held the Terrapins to two shots and one shot on goal that Townsend saved. He also earned a shutout against Kansas City to reach 16 in his career, good for sixth all-time in program history.
- Tulsa enters Tuesday's matchup with a 1-2-0 record after starting the year ranked No. 16 by United Soccer Coaches. A 1-0 loss to Louisville, who sits at No. 12 after Week 1, knocked Tulsa out of the top 25. The Golden Hurricane rebounded to beat UTRGV 4-1 last week for its first win of 2023. Tulsa lost to No. 25 Oral Roberts on Friday, its second ranked loss.
- After starting last season with eight consecutive home games, Missouri State ends its three-game road trip to start the season. After Tulsa, the Bears will return to Springfield for its home opener when it welcomes VCU on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
