September 24, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team capped off a successful weekend at home with a 2-0 win over Belmont on Sunday.
The Bears (7-1-3, 2-0-1 MVC) struck early against the Bruins. Grace O'Keefe put the Bears on the board off an assist from Hailey Chambliss in just the fifth minute. O'Keefe was approximately 12 yards away when she sent the ball straight into the back of the net and past Belmont's goalkeeper Sarah Doyle. This was O'Keefe's first goal of the season.
A little over two minutes later, Chambliss snuck the ball past Doyle and scored a goal of her own with an assist from Carly Raunig. This was Chambliss' third goal and Raunig's first assist of the season.
The Bears were getting shots off with every opportunity. In the first half, they managed six. By the end of the second half, the Bears had attempted 14 shots for a total of 20 by the time the final buzzer rang. Eleven of those 20 shots were on-goal.
The Bears' defense held the Bruins to three shots in 90 minutes. Of those three shots, only one was on-target. Goalkeeper Camielle Day recorded a save in securing her fifth shutout of the season.
"The team has been working hard on creating a balanced attack. I feel we accomplished this in the last two games with six different goal scorers," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "We also defended well from front to back especially by getting the shutout today. I'm proud of the entire team for getting six valuable points at home this weekend."
The first-place Bears are going on the road to face defending MVC champion Valparaiso on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
