CORALVILLE, Iowa – After two hours and 32 minutes of volleyball on Sunday, Central Michigan edged Missouri State by two points in the fifth set of the Bears' final match at the Hawkeye Invitational.
The Chippewas (5-4) won by set scores of 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Missouri State (4-5) led 2-1 after three sets and overcame a 5-0 deficit in the fifth to lead 9-7 and maintained that margin to 11-9 before three attack errors aided a 4-0 CMU run that swung the match towards the Chippewas.
Several Bears posted career high statistical totals, led by
Josie Halbleib doing so in kills (8), assists (42) and digs (14).
Breanah Rives had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while serving the first four aces of her MSU career, and
Morgan Sprague finished with a career-best 11 kills.
MoState served a season-high 12 aces, its fourth match of the year in double figures, and tallied 9.5 blocks.
CMU piled up 18 kills to edge MSU in the opening set, the Bears countered by holding the Chippewas to .065 hitting in the second, then posted a .345 efficiency offensively in the third for the 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was tied 11 times with six lead changes, the last of each came during a 4-0 CMU run for a 17-15 lead.
Missouri State returns to Hammons Student Center next week for its second home tournament of the season. The Bears take on Lindenwood at 6 p.m. Thursday, Western Illinois at 6 p.m. Friday and Arkansas State at 1 p.m. Saturday.
